LOCUST
color and grain pattern are all over the map for this and since I've seen only a few samples of this wood, I cannot comment on which of the web pics are particularly representative of locust or any subspecies.
my samples:
this sample was sent to me by Jean-Francois (Jeff) Audet and spent some time on my "mystery woods" page before being identified by the USDA as honey locust

black locust planks and a closeup --- the color of the wood is slightly more yellow and less orange than this pic shows, and the wood has just a hint of green tint as well. The pics directly below of a smaller piece, cut from this one, are much more accurate.
small plank, cut from the larger on above and sanded for the pic, and an end grain shot. The colors are very accurate.

black locust planks and a closeup
I had read that black locust is one of those woods that flouresces under black light, so I tried it out and boy howdy, it sure does.

black locust turning stock
three views of a freshly sawn black locust plank, submitted by a correspondant named Jeff, whom I thank. Both levels of enlargement are present for all 3 pics, and on the last one the enlargements clearly show some ray flakes. Jeff tells me the color is accurate.
black locust scales
curly black locust scales
black locust veneer
honey locust planks
honey locust planks and a closeup. The closeup is with mineral spirits on the wood. The distance pic is much too red, which is typical of this somewhat dishonest vendor.
honey locust planks with closeups --- the first pic is of a bookmatched pair

honey locust crotch
black locust pen blanks that have been moistened
locust burl pen blanks (probably moistened)
Chineese locust
Indian locust veneer
locust burl --- the first two pics are of the same piece and clearly it is burl only on the right side then tapers to curly and then to plain cut. The last piece has had a finishing agent added and the next to last one probably does as well
