There are at least 26 species from 7 genera that have bangkirai as all or part of one or more of their common names and I have no idea which of them are represented on this page. They are all native to Indonesia and nearby areas. Most of the species are in either the genus Hopea or the genus Shorea. If you take all of the common names from all of the woods that share this common name, you get over 1500 names, so I consider the opportunity for misidentification and/or confusion on this wood to be so large as to make the name essentially meaningless.
NOTE: this site has separate pages for balau and bangkirai, but actually both are names that are shared by dozens of species and both are equally meaningless as far as I'm concerned but rather than combine the pages, I'm going to just leave them both up.
